This article examines whether Bangladesh is gradually transitioning toward a welfare-state model. It explores the expansion of social safety net programs, public expenditure priorities, and government commitments to reducing inequality and vulnerability. While Bangladesh has made notable progress in poverty reduction and social protection coverage, challenges remain in targeting efficiency, fiscal sustainability, and institutional capacity.
The analysis highlights that although welfare-oriented policies are expanding, gaps persist in reaching marginalized populations, particularly informal workers and vulnerable households. Strengthening governance, improving program coordination, and ensuring adequate financing are crucial for moving closer to a true welfare state.
