Bangladesh Poverty Watch Report 2022
Focus: Grassroots Voices and Inclusive Policy.
Prepared jointly with the Institute for Inclusive Finance and Development (InM), this report captures the experiences of Bangladesh’s most marginalized communities, including seven plain land ethnic minority groups and the transgender community. Through personal stories and reflections, the report highlights systemic barriers and structural inequalities that perpetuate poverty.
It outlines priority actions for inclusive growth, financial inclusion, education, health, and local-level governance. Central to its recommendations is empowering local stakeholders, particularly local governments, to participate actively in agenda-setting, implementation, and monitoring, ensuring development is responsive and sustainable.
Bangladesh Poverty Watch Report 2023
Focus: Multidimensional Poverty and Social Exclusion
The 2023 report extends the analysis to 17 ethnic minority groups, river gypsy (Bede) communities, and commercial sex workers, emphasizing that poverty is more than material deprivation. By documenting lived experiences, participants themselves illustrate the “making of poverty” in their communities.
Recommendations focus on empowering local institutions, enabling participatory decision-making, and integrating marginalized voices into policy planning to ensure that poverty reduction efforts are inclusive and locally relevant.
Bangladesh Poverty Watch Report 2024
Focus: Climate Change and Poverty Nexus
The 2024 report explores how climate change intensifies poverty in Bangladesh, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. It analyzes regional variations in climate vulnerability across seven districts and examines how climate-related disasters exacerbate social and economic inequality.
The report outlines a five-element strategy to address the climate-poverty nexus:
1. Inclusive and poverty-sensitive climate adaptation
2. Climate-sensitive poverty reduction initiatives
3. Cross-sectoral synergies
4. Institutional coherence and coordination
5. Strengthening and supporting local initiatives
It highlights the critical role of green inclusive finance in building resilience, enabling adaptation, and supporting the transition to sustainable livelihoods for low-income and marginalized populations.
Green Inclusive Finance: A Framework for Climate Change Response
Focus: Financial Tools for Vulnerable Communities
This framework provides practical strategies to integrate climate adaptation and poverty reduction in Bangladesh through financial inclusion. It identifies three pathways for impact: resilience, adaptation, and transition, and emphasizes the need for targeted financial products, non-financial support, and infrastructure investments.
Key actions include mainstreaming climate resilience into development planning, prioritizing high-risk areas, ensuring local participation, and coordinating across institutions to maximize impact. The framework supports sustainable, inclusive, and climate-informed development.
Bangladesh Poverty Watch Report 2025
The Bangladesh Poverty Watch Report 2025 examines the lives, challenges, and poverty dynamics of slum dwellers in Dhaka. Based on field research, interviews, and personal stories, the report highlights the deepening poverty, exclusion, vulnerability, and systemic inequalities faced by marginalised communities. It presents their voices and experiences while identifying key policy priorities and recommendations for greater inclusion, empowerment, and socioeconomic wellbeing.
